The first time I tasted a Bullit de peix, I was walking along the cliffs near Cala Conta, mesmerized by those turquoise colours in combination with the blue hues of the sky and the motion of the sea overflown by seagulls.
There were a few small piers which harmonized with the landscape like a picture in movement, where several older men were sitting in a circle around a cauldron.
That image aroused my curiosity so I went over to chat with them, they greeted me cheerfully and invited me to try their wine and sit at the table to taste what for me would be my first contact with the typical Ibizan food.
Tradition has it that the bullit de peix was born in the Ibizan llaut, the fishermen’s boat. It was a dinner prepared with “small fry” or the “ugly” fish, which were simmered with potatoes and with that broth and a bit of sepia they cooked a tasty rice.
Everybody visiting Ibiza can not leave without having tasted this delicious dish full of flavour, history and tradition.
